James Franco Teases Screen Time With Rihanna
Actor reveals he almost co-starred in 'We Found Love' clip and may appear with Ri in new Seth Rogen film.

James Franco recently made headlines when he posted a video of himself singing Rihanna's Dr. Luke joint "You Da One" on the Internet. The clip was short, sweet and a bit out of nowhere.
But if you think that Franco was in one of his performance-art moments when he created the viral video, think again. It turns out he's just a fan of the colorful singer. "[It] didn't take a lot of work [to lip-synch to her song]," he confessed to MTV News at CinemaCon in Las Vegas on Tuesday. "But I do like Rihanna."
In fact, his biggest confession about his connection to the singer came next. It seems the two were thisclose to working together on her 2011 "We Found Love" video. As the story goes, before male model Dudley O'Shaughnessy landed the role as Ri's troubled leading man, Franco had the opportunity to be cast as one-half of that rocky romance.
"She actually asked me to be in that video, the one with the relationship that gets crazy," he dished. "I couldn't do it. But, I guess, I hope that that means there's mutual love between us."
Well, apparently these two are getting a second chance to work together, and this time it's on the big screen. Franco teased that Rihanna may appear in pal Seth Rogen's flick "The Apocalypse," which follows a slew of celebs playing themselves. They're partying at Franco's house when they learn the apocalypse is coming.
"I think she's gonna be in the new movie that I'm doing, Seth Rogen's directorial debut," he shared. "I think she has a little part in that."

'Catching Fire': Why Hiring Francis Lawrence Makes Sense
We examine the director's qualifications for the second installment in the 'Hunger Games' series.

On Thursday night, Lionsgate officially offered "Catching Fire" to director Francis Lawrence. The development was widely considered the next letdown in a series of disappointments for fans, who felt Gary Ross' departure was a premature one. But based on what we know about "Catching Fire" and what Lionsgate was reportedly looking for in a replacement, Lawrence was by far the most likely choice.
Here is why Francis Lawrence makes complete sense as the director for "Catching Fire":
He Can Do Action
One of the major complaints about Ross' direction of "The Hunger Games" was that he lacked experience shooting action sequences and it showed. If Lionsgate had to find a new director for the series' second entry, choosing one who has more experience with higher-intensity scenes does makes sense. Though Lawrence's name does not come with the prestige of the other directors on the shortlist, he has the most experience of any of them with directing a big-budget action film.
He's Relatively Inexpensive
Early rumors of Ross' exit had pegged money as the main stumbling block when trying to recruit the director for the second film. We know that Ross made most of his money from "The Hunger Games" on the back end, taking a much lower fee upfront. Lionsgate was reportedly looking to not spend a ton of money on the director for "Catching Fire," and the up-and-coming directors filling out the shortlist more or less confirms that. What makes Lawrence different is that he has the mainstream success that the other independent film directors do not, but he's probably just as willing to work for Lionsgate's lowered fees.
He Knows the Tone
Lawrence's first two films take place in worlds based largely in a reality not far from our own, but ones that add in fantastical elements. In "I Am Legend," Will Smith's character lives in (near) solitude in a post-zombie-vampire outbreak Manhattan, where he hunts the wild animals that now populate the city. Lawrence has established he can make a film set in a world vaguely resembling our own, so it's not hard to imagine Lawrence being able to make the leap to Panem.
He's Done Romance
Granted, it wasn't great romance, but it counts. "Water for Elephants" was also based on a best-selling novel and could come in handy in dealing with the amped-up love triangle among Katniss, Peeta and Gale.
Bennett Miller Wasn't Available
The Playlist originally reported that the race for the director's position came down to two directors, Lawrence and Bennett Miller. The "Moneyball" director was clearly the more distinguished of the two, but he had spent the last few years developing "Foxcatcher," a true-life story about the heir to the DuPont fortune who murdered an Olympic wrestler. In the past few months, Miller has seen "Foxcatcher" finally come together, adding Channing Tatum, Steve Carell and, just recently, Mark Ruffalo to the cast. If Miller would have signed on to direct "Catching Fire," he would have had to further delay "Foxcatcher" just after getting development off the ground.

Jonathan Frid, Original Barnabas Collins In 'Dark Shadows,' Dead At 87
Actor's cameo in Tim Burton's big-screen adaption of soap opera will be his last onscreen appearance.

Actor Jonathan Frid, best known as the man who brought vivid life to one of the most iconic undead characters in TV history, vampire Barnabas Collins in the soap opera "Dark Shadows," died on Friday at the age of 87.
He died of natural causes after a fall at his home in Ancaster, Ontario, though his family chose not to release the news until now.
Frid was a classically trained stage actor, who began his stage career after a tour with the Royal Canadian Navy during World War II. He studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London before going to receive a Master of Fine Arts degree in directing from Yale in 1957.
His talents were a strange match for "Shadows," but Frid's training brought an unexpected subtly to his performance, capturing the imaginations of viewers, including Tim Burton and Johnny Depp, both of whom were rabid fans of "Shadows" when they were young and labored for years to turn the soap into a feature film.
Playing a 200-year-old vampire who is unearthed in the late-1960s, Frid's Barnabas was not a villain but a complex and often sympathetic antihero, who through the soap's 1966-71 run continued to mourn the loss of his true love while trying to crave his bloodlust and protect his descendents from the evil witches and monsters that plagued their beloved family mansion, Collinwood.
The big-screen version of "Shadows" is set to open on May 11 and is easily one of the most anticipated films of the summer. Frid shot a cameo for the film, marking his first film role since 1974's "Seizure" (Olive Stone's feature-directing debut). While on set in London, he got to spend time with Depp, who plays Barnabas, and as Frid's "Shadows" co-star Kathryn Leigh Scott told The Wrap, both Depp and Burton were effusive with their praise for the actor and his most famous character.
"Both Johnny Depp and Tim Burton looked at Jonathan and said, 'We wouldn't be here without you,' " Scott said.
After being based in New York City for more than 40 years and working to great acclaim both on and off Broadway, Frid retired to Canada in 1994, though he continued to act, performing one-man shows for charities in both Canada and the U.S., and appearing at "Dark Shadows" conventions, which have only grown in popularity over the years. He reportedly always felt a close connection to "Shadows" fans and maintained a website so they could follow what he was up to.
Frid's cameo in Burton's "Shadows" will be his last onscreen performance.

'Spider-Man' Director Marc Webb Plays With 'Amazing' Canon
'We wanted to do our own thing,' filmmaker tells MTV News about his approach to the upcoming Spider-Man reboot for Sony.

Stop us if you've heard this one: Boy genius gets bit by a radioactive spider, gains superpowers, acts like a jerk for a while until his beloved uncle dies as a result, thereby inspiring him to start using his powers for good. A familiar tale, right? Those details — most of them at least — remain firmly in place for "The Amazing Spider-Man," the upcoming cinematic reboot of the iconic Marvel superhero. But director Marc Webb wants you to know that there's much more to this new tale than meets the eye.
Some of the differences between the Sam Raimi/Tobey Maguire "Spider-Man" era and the upcoming new order are very clear right off the bat: new filmmaker, new leading man in Andrew Garfield. But there are other, more subtle differences too: a tone that's a bit more grounded in reality, a new parent-centric backstory and a little filmmaking trick you might have heard of called 3-D. All of these things and more work together to bring moviegoers a Spider-Man they're familiar with, but one who's more than willing to spin a few curveballs along the way.
As Summer Movie Preview week continues, MTV News presents our conversation with Webb about all things "Amazing" — from his "Spider-Man" fandom and the cues he took from the Raimi/Maguire films to why Garfield was the perfect choice to play Peter Parker, and much more.
MTV: Aside from having a last name in common with his weapons of choice, can you give us a sense of your Spider-Man fandom? How long have you been a fan of this character?
Marc Webb: I knew it obviously from when I was a little kid. I was between comic book series, but there was the animated series that I saw, that sort of thing. But I don't know what it is: Kids have an intuitive attraction to Spider-Man, something that exists beyond the comic books and all the different media that's out there. There's something so simple, symmetrical and iconic about that design that kids are just drawn to it. So I can't say when I started becoming a fan, but I've always been curious.
It wasn't until I got a call from Sony that I started thinking about the character in a more intellectual way. At first, I thought it was an absurd idea, but what stayed with me and haunted me was the idea that this character is so intensely relatable: He's a superhero who's just a kid. He's not a billionaire, not an alien. His normal identity is so ordinary in so many ways, and so relatable, and that's something about Marvel that I always liked. They made the teenagers the superheroes: the X-Men and Spider-Man, whereas [teens] were just the sidekicks in DC Comics. I think it was at a time in your life when you're starting to access these stories and mythologies that make the wish-fulfillment component much more intense. I know I have a 17-year-old boy trapped inside of me forever, and that's something with an instant appeal.
MTV: It wasn't so long ago that there was a trilogy of popular "Spider-Man" films ...
Webb: What? No! What the f---?
MTV: It's true! [Laughs.] It's certainly a tough act to follow. Was there anything from the Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire era that you looked to when approaching your version of "Spider-Man," or did you want to stay away from those films and start completely fresh?
Webb: We wanted to do our own thing. We wanted a different villain and a different tone. There wasn't anything I wanted to recapture from those movies, beyond their respect for the character. I thought that was a really wonderful thing. We're doing something different and new and risky, and I understand that. But it's something that I've found very appealing. I couldn't let the opportunity go. I have deep and abiding respect for Sam and Tobey and all those movies that were made, but we are trying to achieve something different. It's a unique set of circumstances when you talk about Spider-Man, because he's been around for 50 years. People talk about rebooting characters. It's different than, say, Harry Potter, who has just a handful of books for his entire canon. There's so much material in Spider-Man that there are so many stories to tell and so many characters. It's more like James Bond or something like that.
MTV: Judging from trailers and the few scenes that have been released online, the takeaway for me is that this is a grittier "Spider-Man" movie, a bit more dangerous than some of the more cartoony takes we've seen previously. But the prankster side is still in place too. There's a clip online of Peter really toying with a guy as he's webbing him up, so the comedy is definitely there. How did you find the right mix of comedy and darkness in this movie?
Webb: I wouldn't say we were ever after pursuing darkness. We just wanted to keep things real. I think it comes down to everything having to emerge from a real place. The reason why Spider-Man is being so playful in that moment is that as a character, he's feeling drunk on his power. He's having a really good time. He's becoming a bit of a bully there. He's not being deeply altruistic, and that's something you'll learn more about when you see the movie. It's a reflection of his attitude: He puts that mask on and the shy kid is gone. He's now this really empowered superhero. That means having fun, sometimes at other people's expense.
MTV: Andrew had that great quote the other week, of Spider-Man acting like an Internet troll in the movie.
Webb: It's totally true. You get to see and do whatever you want without any personal consequences. There's a danger to that ... but there's a thrill to it too.
MTV: I was very happy with the casting of Andrew pretty much immediately. Looking at his work in "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus," he struck me as a guy who could nail the comedy and the drama of the role. When you saw Andrew audition, what was it about him that stuck out to you? What made you see Peter Parker in this guy?
Webb: He was both funny and earnest and he had a physical ability that I knew I could rely on. I wanted the movie to be funny, but I also wanted the movie to have real emotional depth and an emotional range. He can do that, and that's incredibly rare: to find somebody who can be light and witty but can also communicate the real tragedy of the character vis-ávis his parents, Uncle Ben and the incredible sacrifices he ends up having to make. Finding someone who can be funny and deep all in one movie, it's tricky.
Beyond that, he brought something to the table that I'd thought about in the abstract but never really figured out exactly how to achieve: How does Spider-Man move? How do you make that character and the identity flow throughout the movement of Spider-Man? He became obsessed with that, looking at how spiders move. He had an idea — which we didn't end up doing — where we built up the knuckles in the suit, so that they would arch like they do in the comic books. He became really infatuated with those details from the comics and how spider DNA would actually take over the body of a human. His spider-sense gives him a sense of space that normal humans don't have, an agility most people don't have. It became a real method style of being Spider-Man, which is something you don't see very often. And when you wanted that levity and you wanted that humor, he had that. It's such a rare combination.
MTV: In addition to Andrew's interest, you got the chance to play around with the physicality of the character through 3-D, I'm sure. Can you talk a little about the way 3-D is used in your film?
Webb: We started making the movie around the time "Avatar" came out. Every studio in the world wanted 3-D. I hadn't worked with it before. I didn't want it forced upon the movie because I've seen bad conversions and it scared me that people weren't using it properly. It had been used so incredibly effectively in "Avatar," and that was really appealing. I wanted to figure out how to give the audience an experience that's worthy of a "Spider-Man" film, and it was one of those things that just felt completely organic after a while. What can 3-D do? When I looked at all the movies that were out there and the tests, I found what I call the three V's of 3-D: volume, vertigo and velocity. These things create a specific sensation that made a lot of sense for a Spider-Man movie: flying through the air, a sense of vertigo. In the trailer, there's a shot of a tower falling. When you see that in 3-D or in an IMAX environment, it's spectacular. It's a feeling you don't get very often. I think that 3-D is an extra tool that can tickle parts of the brain that you can't in any other way. With Spider-Man, particularly the second half of our movie, there are moments and feelings you just can't get in any other way.
What do you think of Webb's take on Spider-Man? Sound off in the comments section!

The Zones, They Are a Changin' symptoms of ring worm
Well, here it's pretty much Christmas time. Do we nevertheless landscape our garden at this time? I guess it is determined by what your geographical location is. The one particular massive rule of thumb is: it is possible to plant plants provided that the ground just isn't frozen. There is certainly additional towards the story although. In the event you know it is going to freeze and freeze deeply, it is normally greater to plant only plants that may take the difficult freeze. For example, inside the Dallas area zone seven, rather than organizing 4 inch ground covers like Asian Jasmine, we would typically plant 1 gallon since the roots are deeper and commonly it will not freeze. That is 5 to six inches deep in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. I know in the Cincinnati location, which I think is like zone 4,and naturally north of there, exterior preparing entirely shuts down.
In zone 7, 8, and warmer zones, we continue to landscape and plant annuals including pansies all by way of the winter, anytime the ground just isn't frozen. We also plant in our gardens the ornamental cabbages and kales which will live even when the ground is frozen. In zone eight, which is the Houston area, we also can plant snapdragons, cyclamen, and also the attractive flowering annual jasmine which is a blue flowering annual plant that can basically take shade and flowers within the winter.
As far as planting trees, the adage nonetheless goes- when the grounds not frozen, plant it.When you are going to plant a tree, It really is most effective to use a tree in the bigger sizes, which include 15 gallon or bigger and the roots will likely be deeper; thus, less chance of freeze damage taking place. Planting a tree at this time of year is truly ideal, since the root program will continue to grow although the top is dormant. This provides the tree the chance to root and after that to possess a genuinely magnificent leading inside the spring. It is just about as if, the tree had an additional year of growth. So the old saying" fall is for planting" just isn't totally with out merit and just isn't just a phrase that the landscape and garden trade came up with so they're going to have work year-round.
In zone eight particularly in the Houston region, planting in the fall and winter employed to become a no-brainer. That was before the 2009 in 2010 extreme freezes, when it got in to the teens. It really is practically as when the Houston region wants to be rezoned to seven. I guess we'll wait and see if 2011 provides us the identical extreme freezes and if it does, possibly we really need to rethink our zone eight thinking. Only the most cold hardy palms such as Mediterranean fan Palm, Windmill Palm, the date palms, the sabal palms, and a few of the fan palms for instance Washingtonia robusta and Washingtonia flifera survived the cold. Really a few of the other much less hardy palms for instance the pygmy date palms, Queen palms, foxtail palms survived but only in tiny numbers and most likely only in select places that had been shielded from harsh cold and after that with considerable harm. Take the pygmy date palm as an example, a few of the three trunk pygmy date palms survived but only one particular of the trunks would survive. Therefore major to trunks becoming cut off, as well as the a single trunk remaining would take the entire season to have sufficient fronds to resemble a palm again.
Many people today replaced their pygmy date palms after the freeze in 2009, thinking it the freeze was a fluke. Regrettably, they were not pleasantly surprised when the 2010 freeze killed their beautiful pygmy date palm replacements. It was not just pygmy date palms, of course, but numerous other marginally tropical plants had been replaced and subsequently froze and died in the 2010 freeze. Now we're stuck anxiously awaiting to see if the 2011 winter also brings an incredibly challenging freeze. Every single time it freezes, fewer and fewer with the far more tropical plants are replaced.
I recall, it was the winter of 1985, I believe, we also got an extreme freeze in Houston. it went down to 14°and a number of the northern regions in the Houston metroplex recorded temperatures as low as 9 degrees. Suddenly, the following year, nobody would plant anything that had been frozen are even burned back by the freeze. Then the next year, symptoms of ring worm, when it did not freeze that winter as difficult, men and women branched out and planted a couple of plants that were marginally tropical. When it did not freeze once more the following year, extra tropical plants were planted. Plus the progression continued, until 2009 when folks were planting completely tropical zone nine and 10 plants, thinking Houston along with the surrounding location was a zone 10 tropical paradise. The freeze of 2009 shook that thought method, however it wasn't conclusive to most, and it took the freeze of 2010 to convince even by far the most stubborn that Houston is just not an equatorial zone 10. Tropical plants should really only planted as annuals or even possibly several as perennial. We may perhaps go one more 20 or more years without having a extreme freeze in the low teens, but are you currently willing to put your funds on the line? As a landscaper, I really feel a moral obligation to alert clients that are asking me to plant all of these cutesy and frilly tropical plants that there is a really authentic possibility that they'll freeze and most likely die. Strangely adequate, we're gamblers and we are instructed to plant them anyway. Usually it go one thing like this. "Oh no, don't plant something that could die! I do like a few of the hibiscus, they did so effectively at the last house I lived in" So right here we go once again. We plant them!!
So, is there a lesson here we've learned? The only lesson I see we have learned is that we in no way understand. We develop into additional cautious temporarily, but we assume that it in all probability will not come about again. We gamble once more, we generally shed. But we weigh the costs against the possible benefit of getting attractive, blooming, evergreen shrubs and we do it once more. So does the benefit outweigh the potential loss? Apparently so! So let's do it again and once again. We're human. We err. We get knocked down. We stand up. We do it once again. Perhaps that is what getting human is all about. Interesting, signs and symptoms of ring worm, how, even within the plant globe, humans can understand a lesson or... Not!!

Kimbra And Gotye 'Excited' For 'SNL' Appearance
'Somebody That I Used To Know' singer Kimbra jokes that she probably won't appear in any sketches on late-night comedy show.
By Jocelyn Vena
Looking for some moody music to set the tone this Saturday night? Well, Kimbra and Gotye have your back. The chart-topping duo are set to perform their heartbreaking track "Somebody That I Used to Know" this week on "Saturday Night Live" as the show's musical guests.
When Kimbra stopped by the MTV Newsroom on Friday (April 13), just one day before her late-night performance, she opened up about the opportunity to hit the stage in the famed studio. " 'Saturday Night Live' is going to be great. I'm really excited," she said. "We've had a few rehearsals. It's really cool to just get a feel of the whole vibe. I've heard such great stuff about the experience. It's gonna be awesome."
While many musical artists have joined in the fun of appearing in comedy sketches on the show, Kimbra admits she won't be cracking any jokes this weekend. "Not that I know of! I hope not. That would be fun, but I'm not very funny!" the native New Zealander shared, noting that she's mostly only watched clips online. "I haven't seen all that much of the show. I've seen little bits here and there. I know Tina Fey used to be on it. It looks so much fun. It's gonna be great.
"I think 'SNL' is so well-known for its musical performances, as well, and people really breaking into America through a really great performance on there," she added. "So I think me and Gotye are both really excited to be amongst such company. You know, it's great."
This gig is yet another milestone for Kimbra and Gotye as they continue to find small-screen and chart success with "Somebody That I Used to Know." It was covered on "Glee" and has been featured on "The Voice" and "American Idol."
This week's "SNL" will be hosted by "Men in Black III" star Josh Brolin.
James Cameron Denies Shooting 'Avatar 2' Footage During Dive
'If they think of you first as a filmmaker, then all of the exploration stuff must be so that you can be a better filmmaker,' he tells MTV News.
By Kevin P. Sullivan, with reporting by Josh Horowitz
When James Cameron returned from his record-breaking deep-sea dive to the Mariana Trench, many people assumed the expedition must have been for a movie, most likely "Avatar 2," which is said to involve the oceans of Pandora.
But Cameron, when he spoke with MTV News, insisted that is simply not the case. "Completely spurious rumor. People try to connect the dots, right? If they think of you first as a filmmaker, then all of the exploration stuff must be so that you can be a better filmmaker. Wrong conclusion," he said. "That's like [saying] 'A frog with no legs is deaf.' "
The director said the two aspects of his life are connected, but not in a way the rumors suspected. "The correct conclusion is I do the movies to pay for the expeditions, so every once in a while, I have to come back to make a movie," Cameron said. "It's pretty much that simple."
Even with films planned for the immediate future, Cameron doesn't seem that worried about his explorations getting in the way. "I think the studio execs that want another 'Avatar' film are probably more concerned than I am," he said.
Cameron's trips to the bottom of the ocean are admittedly dangerous, and he spoke openly about the potential risks involved with that kind of exploration. "I would say watch out for implosion. When a pressure vessel implodes at that kind of pressure, it does so at supersonic speed," he said. "There are things worse, though, like coming up outside of the search area, because you're bolted into the sub. You're going down pretty far. It's possible to come partway up, get moved 25 miles in a current before you come all the way up. That would be bad."
According to Cameron, that kind of morbid thinking is what prevents actual tragedies from occurring. "You could freeze to death at the bottom, you could have a fire inside the sphere and asphyxiate — all kinds of bad stuff. The reason you get morbid is by going through all the scenarios ahead of time, you're doing the engineering to prevent them and you create all the procedures to prevent them," Cameron said. "It's basically what NASA does. You list every single thing that could go wrong, and then you do everything you can to have that not happen."
As for where Cameron hopes to explore next, he said the ocean will keep him busy for the foreseeable future. "We have a vehicle now that can go, by definition, to anywhere in any ocean in the world. If it can go to the deepest place in the Challenger Deep, 65,000 feet down, it can go anywhere else," he said. "There's so much yet to be explored. That's an unknown continent on our planet. Think about Google. You can basically call up a satellite photograph of some hill in the Congo in seconds, but you can't do that underwater. I could be exploring down there for the next whatever."
